Do semiconductors follow Ohms law Why or why not ?

Semiconductors do not strictly follow Ohm’s Law because their resistance is not constant and changes with voltage, current, temperature, and other factors. Ohm’s Law states that the current through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the voltage across the two points, provided the temperature remains constant. In semiconductors, this linear relationship does not always hold true due to the material’s variable conductivity.

A semiconductor does not follow Ohm’s Law under all conditions. While at very low electric fields, some semiconductors may exhibit approximately ohmic behavior, meaning the current and voltage relationship is nearly linear. However, as the electric field increases, the relationship becomes nonlinear due to the complex behavior of charge carriers in the semiconductor material.

Semiconductors can obey Ohm’s Law at low electric fields where the relationship between current and voltage is nearly linear. In this regime, the semiconductor behaves like a resistor with relatively constant resistance. However, this is only true over a limited range of conditions. As the electric field increases, the conductivity of the semiconductor changes, and the linear relationship breaks down.

A semiconductor diode does not obey Ohm’s Law because its current-voltage relationship is nonlinear. Diodes allow current to flow easily in one direction (forward bias) and block it in the opposite direction (reverse bias). This behavior results in an exponential increase in current with increasing forward voltage, which deviates from the linear relationship described by Ohm’s Law.

Conductors typically obey Ohm’s Law within certain limits, provided the temperature and other physical conditions remain constant. In conductors, the resistance is usually constant, leading to a linear relationship between current and voltage. However, at extremely high currents or voltages, or at varying temperatures, even conductors may deviate from Ohm’s Law.
